Supervision
I see supervision as a consultative endeavour and I aim to stay open hearted, secure in what we understand, know & believe and to be excited about what might unfold. Support & development are to me, important aspects of the supervisory relationship.
As a UKCP Registered Supervisor, I supervise individuals and groups, offering Therapeutic Supervision for Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Trainees.
My philosophy is that there is no one way to supervise, but my supervision style is a unique mix of what I have learned, my natural attitude & skills and the dynamic which is created in the room between the triad of supervisee, client & supervisor. I integrate humanistic, transpersonal, psychodynamic, transactional analysis, existential and cognitive behavioural theories. I also pay attention to the somatic, cultural & spiritual presentation of the material being presented. The therapeutic relationship is at the core of change for the client & I see the importance of this reflected in the supervisory relationship, thus creating a reflective space for learning & insight to emerge in a safe space.
In supervision, we look more widely & deeply at the client material presented, thus enabling you, the supervisee to gain greater illumination from the subtle dance of dialogue between supervisor & supervisee, which can reflect, inform & inspire our work. If you, the supervisee leave a session feeling more aware, informed, inspired, skilled, supported & encouraged, then we have achieved our task. (Adapted from Gaie Houston:1990)
My own ongoing learning & understanding enables me to stretch my supervisees with up to date theory, research & approaches which often enlighten us both! I believe in both personal & professional development & will support supervisees to get to where they want to go. I also support & challenge my supervisees if they should find themselves in an ethical dilemma.
Our work can be demanding, it sets us particular challenges, it uses our different energies and raises important questions for us to consider, wrestle with & expand upon. In particular our transference/counter-transference issues, unconscious and parallel processes and how we use or observe metaphor and symbolism. In particular, when our own story comes into the room, as frequently happens, it can be shocking & discombobulating and we need a safe place to unpick the unfolding themes. There is sometimes a delicate dance between supervision & therapy at this point & together we will find our way through.
Please do phone for an initial chat – I will be pleased to hear from you.
I work a full 60 min hour & the current recommendation for supervision requirements is 90 minutes per 4 week period as a minimum. Supervisees with a heavy workload may need to look at one hour per fortnight in order to feel fully supported & to support their clients in the best possible way.
Please call me to discuss your requirements and to ask about fees.
